Root Canal Treatment
saving your tooth, stopping the pain.

These days, root canal treatment can rescue a painful or infected tooth that would once have simply been removed. Magnification, a rubber dam and rotary instruments make the whole thing quicker and considerably more comfortable than the old stories suggest.

Overview — 001

Keep your natural tooth wherever we possibly can.

During root canal treatment, infected or inflamed tissue is cleared from inside the tooth, the canals disinfected, then sealed against future infection. We'd nearly always rather keep your natural tooth than remove it, since extraction just leaves a gap that's more expensive to fix later with an implant, bridge or denture. Afterwards, back teeth usually need a crown to stop them fracturing under everyday chewing.

  • Saves teeth that would otherwise need extraction
  • Magnification and rubber dam for precision
  • Comfortable under local anaesthetic
  • Same-day starts available for severe pain
  • Usually 1–2 visits
  • Crown recommended afterwards on back teeth
The process — 002

How it goes, step by step.

4 stages
  1. 01
    20–30 min

    Assessment & X-ray

We pinpoint the source of the pain or infection and confirm root canal is genuinely the right approach.

  2. 02
    10 min

    Numb & isolate

Once numb, the tooth is isolated with a rubber dam so the area stays clean and dry throughout treatment.

  3. 03
    60–90 min

    Clean & seal

Infected tissue is cleared from the canals before they're disinfected, shaped and sealed.

  4. 04
    See crowns

    Crown (back teeth)

Afterwards, back teeth are usually fitted with a crown to guard against cracking under normal biting forces.

The things people actually ask.

  • No — you'll be numb the whole way through, and most patients describe it as feeling much like an extended filling appointment.

  • Wherever it's viable, we'll keep the tooth. Extraction just leaves a gap that costs more to fill later with an implant, bridge or denture.

  • Generally one to two visits of around 90 minutes each, and back teeth usually need a crown fitted afterwards.

  • Front teeth are £550, premolars £700 and molars £850, with any crown afterwards charged separately.
